PNG vs. layered PSD: what character art files actually contain
A file extension tells you the container, not how much useful editing structure is inside it. Check the delivered image dimensions and layer list before deciding that a pack fits your workflow.
PNG: a finished raster image
A PNG is useful for viewing, sharing and placing artwork into another document. It does not preserve separate drawing layers. Transparency is possible, but a PNG can also have an opaque background.
Read the native pixel dimensions and check the actual edge treatment. A large canvas does not guarantee detailed artwork if the source was enlarged. If the background is important to your project, ask for an example against both light and dark colors.
PSD: inspect the layer list
One PSD may contain linework, base colors, shading and accessories on separate layers. Another may contain separate front, side and back views, with each view flattened. A third may contain one raster image and a blank layer for paint-over work. All are PSD files, but they support different edits.
If your goal is to change a coat color without repainting the shadows, ask whether the colors and shading are separated. If your goal is to reposition views on a sheet, separate view layers may be sufficient.
PDF: a presentation or printing document
A PDF can be convenient for reviewing a character sheet at a defined page size. It does not automatically make raster artwork into vectors or create editable linework. Check the source artwork size and intended print dimensions.
Keep the original PNG or PSD alongside the PDF. That gives a future artist the clearest available source rather than a screenshot taken from a document viewer.
Check a pack before you choose it
Use the exact product page as the source of truth. Do not infer file contents from a polished cover.
- Native pixel dimensions for each image
- Transparent or opaque background
- Layer names and which areas are flattened
- Separate views, expressions or outfits actually included
- Applications and versions the seller has tested
- License text, delivery method and any missing dependencies
