Adoptable vs. character reference pack: which do you need?
Similar-looking character images can be very different products. Choose by the intended use and written terms, then check the file contents. A beautiful preview cannot tell you all of that on its own.
An adoptable centers on a character design
An adoptable is commonly presented as a design that a buyer can name, develop or use according to the seller’s terms. Some listings offer one-buyer exclusivity; others do not. Ask whether exclusivity covers the design, the supplied image, or both.
A purchase may supply one image rather than a complete character production kit. Additional outfits, expression sheets, transparent files and editable source documents must be listed explicitly if you need them.
A reference pack centers on reusable visual material
A character reference pack may provide several file formats or views for study, paint-over work or use in a finished project. A non-exclusive pack can be offered to more than one buyer. It should not be represented as a one-owner character without separate permission.
On Pixadopt, the creature PNG, PDF and PSD packs describe their own formats and limitations. Some PSDs contain raster artwork with a separate paint-over layer; that is different from a fully separated drawing.
A base and a template solve different problems
A drawing base supplies underlying art that you customize within its usage terms. A layout template supplies the frame: spaces for views, palettes, names and notes. A layout can help present a character, but it does not automatically include the character shown in a mockup.
Check whether preview images are examples or included files. Also confirm the required editing application and whether fonts, brush tips or other dependencies are supplied.
