Fursona reference sheet checklist: what to include
A useful fursona reference sheet answers the questions another artist would otherwise have to ask. Clear markings and consistent proportions matter more than squeezing many tiny poses onto one page.
Choose views that explain the design
Begin with an unobstructed full-body front view. Add a back view when the tail, hair or markings carry details that cannot be seen from the front. A side view helps explain the muzzle, horns, feet and body profile.
Use neutral poses for the main reference. Dynamic illustrations are useful for personality, but foreshortening and crossed limbs can hide important features. If a sheet offers several poses of the same angle, do not assume it is a three-view turnaround.
Make markings easy to reproduce
Add flat color swatches and explain which fur, eye, paw and accessory areas use each color. Identify left and right from the character’s perspective. For asymmetric designs, show both sides or add close-ups.
A lit painting can shift the apparent colors. Pair atmospheric artwork with an unlit palette or a written note so another artist does not mistake a highlight for a permanent marking.
Include the details that define your fursona
Prioritize the features that are difficult to infer from the silhouette. A cropped detail box is often more useful than another decorative pose.
- Species or hybrid traits, muzzle shape and ear shape
- Tail length, number of tails and distinctive patterns
- Paw pads, claws, horns, wings or unusual anatomy
- Hair shape, eye color and markings on each side
- Default outfit and removable accessories
- A few expressions and a short personality note
Prepare files for the next artist
Send a readable image at its native resolution and keep the original file. A transparent PNG is useful only if the file actually contains transparency; a checkerboard painted into the background is not transparency.
If you need editable linework or separate colors, ask for the PSD layer list. A PSD may contain a single flat image and a blank paint-over layer. That can still support edits, but it is different from separated anatomy, linework and color layers.
